Kenya MX observe World Environment Day
In a bid to protect the natural environment from destruction or pollution, Kenya motocross riders joined masses across the globe in observing the auspicious World Environment Day (WED).
The Day fell on June 5 but motocross riders dedicated the Fourth Round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship series to the noble tree-planting exercise at Jamhuri Park Racetrack on Sunday, June 7, 2009.
To sustain the slogan “Ride Green, over 30riders (as seen in the picture) engaged in the rare activity to conserve the environment with a pep talk sensitizing them on the importance of the plan.
“Each rider was given an opportunity to plant and own trees; and nourish them for the rest of the year,” Maina Muturi, the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) Chairman said.
Muturi, who is also the Vice Chairman of Africa Motorcycle Union (AMU)-in charge of environment- said riders will plant 1000 trees by the end of the year 2009.
The “Ride Green” campaign is working out well in Kenya. The momentum already provides riders to lead the way to a healthy environment. The Ride Green initiative is perfect for riders because it combines their passion for riding while exercising their duty to be environmentally perfect.

SOUTH AFRICA
In celebration of World Environment Day on 5th June, Motorsport South Africa (MSA), the controlling body of all forms of motorsport in South Africa, has embarked on a greening campaign to plant trees at disadvantaged schools across the country.
With the financial assistance from the international controlling body of motorcycling, the FIM trees were purchased from national greening social enterprise, Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) and local nurseries. In total 360 trees were planted at 15 different schools in the Western Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape to promote greening, awareness of climate change, food security and to offset carbon dioxide emissions.
